Preseason football is never a thing of beauty. That being said the 2011 edition of Battle of the Bay was ugly in a way not even a mother can defend like the kid from that Cher flick. We’re talking ugly in every way.

Here is your snapshot of this game: At halftime the Raiders and 49ers combined for as many points as turnovers (3)

The Niners overcame a comedy of special teams errors to send Oakland to 0-2 in the preseason thanks to a listless 17-3 loss.

So far during Hue Jackson’s bully construction he seems to have forgotten about his tools to reconstruct last season’s offense. Injuries play a hand in how out of sync Oakland’s O’s is but that excuse along with preseason jitters is getting old already.

To be sure there were a few flashes from the up and coming Silver and Black talent that’s got to make Al Davis feel vindicated. But overall this team as a whole is still looking very listless with only two more tune-ups left.

Jobs are on the line. Time is running short. Injuries are becoming more troubling. Strap yourself in tight Nation, this is looking like a bumpy ride. Here are my game notes for take two of Coach Jackson’s directorial debut

- The Red Zone is still a dead zone for Oakland. Jason Campbell is the symbol of Oakland’s out of sync offense. At this point play-action is the only thing that works. His receivers (including Darrius Heyward-Bey) are bailing out his bad throws. Plus he’s still gun shy, doing the sensible yet maddening thing by playing it safe and not throwing across his body when Kevin Boss is more open than a Denny’s next to a bar at 2:00am on a Saturday morning.

- Campbell’s performance is not his only issue as JC went down late in the first half with what we hope is not a head or neck injury of the serious or mandatory inactivity variety.

- If JC is in danger of missing time Trent Edwards did himself no favors with his few token snaps in the first half. His what were you thinking INT was an underthrown toss into double coverage. Kyle Boller started after halftime and took every snap in the second half. At this point the QB position is pretty irrelevant. Just One TD in two games.

The following is an entry in the diary of Al Davis.

Seymour Watch, Day Three:

Three days ago I called up an old friend in Massachusetts to inquire about a trade. In less than an hour we had a gentlemen’s agreement: I was to procure the services of one defensive lineman named Richard Seymour in exchange my friend in the Northeast received a first round draft choice.

Here we are, three days later and I have yet to see Mr. Seymour show his face in Oakland, California.

I thought my old buddy was doing me a favor. I assumed that he was trying to repay me for the gift of Randy Moss. As it turns out he is every bit the cheat and liar that had a ball boy illegally videotaping practices. It has been brought to my attention that Mr. Seymour was promised a new contract this year. Unbeknownst to Seymour, my friend was plotting to trade him all along and did so over a holiday weekend. The discussion of a new contract was nothing more than the pillow talk Tony Romo was uttering in the ear of that fat girl he dumped in the IHOP parking lot.

Of all the lowly ways to treat an employee! I would never do something as such. (Marcus Allen doesn’t count, that was different.)

Now, my newest toy is wallowing somewhere leaving me stuck between a police investigation in Napa and Tommy Kelly’s contract.

It is now my reasonability to dig deep and give Mr. Seymour the money he desires or I’m to renounce the deal and reacquire my draft pick in 2011. With the way our defense has been playing, we’ll have another top 10 pick in 2011 and I’ll be forced to pass on Michael Crabtree once again as he’ll no doubt be reentering the NFL draft for a third time.

WE MUST KEEP SEYMOUR!!!!

What is an owner/GM/coach/collector of tracksuits to do?

Perhaps I should have taken a page out of the Zygi Wilf handbook and sent Tom Cable to the airport to pick up Seymour in that blasted Hummer he bought once I made him the head coach. (Note to self: Did we ever actually give him a contract? I remember the press conference and all but did we actually give him the job or did Cable just sit in his office this whole off-season until I forgot who he was?)

What to do?

We need to free up more money for this guy because I’m sure with his help we could go from being the 31st ranked run defense to the 28th. I’m positive that can happen!

Maybe I can find a way to get out of another contract like we did with DeAngelo Hall last year. Ah, the look on DeAngelo’s face when I told him to take his contract and wipe his ass with it. Classic stuff!

Let’s see…we’ve got all this money tied up in a cornerback and a punter. As much as I like Nnamdi Asomugha, I just feel like it would make more sense to keep our $4-million a year punter than a shutdown corner.

I’m going to get it right this time! They will have no choice but to put Shane Lechler in the Hall of Fame. This one’s for you, Ray Guy!

Then it is done!

We’ll cut Nnamdi, restructure Darrius Heyward-Bey so he’s paid per drop (I believe it’s called the Braylon Edwards clause) and I’m going to send Bill Romanowski out to Massachusetts to have a little meeting with my friend who can’t seem to keep the sleeves on his sweatshirts.

If all else fails, we’ll just call off the entire 2009 season and finish that move to Irwindale I planned some years ago.

I love it when a plan comes together!

(The above is purely fictional. In no way does Mr. Davis consider anybody in the Northeast who happens to coach a professional football team as a liar or cheater. Nor would Mr. Davis ever consider cutting Nnamdi Asomugha in order to sign Richard Seymour. Also, so far as I know, Romanowski is no longer on the Raider payroll.)

When Darrius Heyward-Bey was selected seventh overall in the draft, the whole world knew that the Oakland Raiders were undertaking a project.

After some up and down performances in training camp, the question now is how long until Hey-Bey puts it all together?

Give the rookie credit. His agent worked furiously to make sure he was in camp and ready to earn his keep. He shows up everyday with a workman like attitude and a desire to improve. He runs great routes and has shown flashes of being the homerun threat that Al Davis envisioned.

The biggest issue is the one that hangs around his neck like a 24-inch fiagro chain bought at the swap meet: his hands.

Is the best yet to come for the Raiders and DHB?

For receivers, your hands are like the legs on a sprinter. Your hands are the bread and butter of the position as an NFL wide out. Too many Braylons and you could find yourself out of a job.

Adjusting is never easy. Six months ago Darrius Heyward-Bey was just a kid at the NFL combine trying to get noticed. Now, he’s got the weight of $20 million in guaranteed money hovering above his head, the laughter of Cris Carter still ringing in his ears and his introduction to the NFL is lining up face to face with Nnamdi Asomugha in the heat of August.

Not to mention that Darrius had his worst performance when Mr. Davis was one of the faces in the crowd. After being given a lecture by the boss and seeing his position coach get an earful from Tom Cable, you can see why Heyward-Bey is pressing.

Even though the Maryland native was a sprinter in his former life, he’s got to know that this is a marathon of the most grueling circumstances.

Nothing comes easy in the pros, making progress each day is the key. So long as his teammates continue to encourage him and he stays the course of being dedicated and receptive to coaching, he’ll be putting himself in a place to succeed.

Of course, when you’re a Raider fan and you’ve had to suffer through the six worst years of your football life. Patience is not something you look forward to cheering for on Sundays.

The pressures are many. The expectations are high. The world is watching.

Every receiver drops the ball on occasion. However, not every receiver was welcomed into the NFL in such an unceremonious manner as Darrius was.

Time is not a luxury in the NFL and the clock is already ticking on Heyward-Bey.

How long will it be until the truth of this controversial pick is revealed?

If it takes him all of his rookie year to become the playmaker that stretches the field for JaMarcus Russell will it be too late? What if DHB doesn’t come around until his third year of being buried on the depth chart behind Chaz Schilens and Louis Murphy?

There is no timetable for adjusting to the NFL. There is only the here and now.

Right now, we’ve got more questions than answers.
