Slowly but surely we’re getting a better idea of Reggie McKenzie’s draft philosophy. With the handful of picks the Raiders have McKenzie is looking to take the best player available regardless of position and he’s looking to add depth.

While McKenzie has said the Raiders aren’t going to place as big an emphasis on the stopwatch any longer that doesn’t change the fact that superior athletes will always be a commodity in the NFL.

Virginia defensive end Cam Johnson is the type of player McKenzie and his staff should be a keeping eye on. He’s a pure 4-3 defensive end blessed with all kinds of athletic ability and he’d certainly add depth to Oakland’s talented defensive line.

NFL Mocks gave Johnson a second round value which would obviously take him out of Oakland’s plans as they’re not on the clock until the end of round three. However, you never know how the chips may fall on draft day and if Johnson is still available when the Raiders are drafting then chances are he will be the best player available. Here’s a snapshot of Johnson’s draft profile.

Cam Johnson, DE, Virginia

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 268lbs.

Strengths: An impressive athlete with quick feet for his size. Three-year starter at UVA that moved from outside linebacker when the Cavaliers switched from the 3-4. Explosive off the line with nice moves to elude blockers. Sheds blocks with the best and gives good effort in pursuit.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t handle double teams well, seemingly quitting at times when he’s outmatched. Doesn’t always play with a high motor, can vanish from time to time. Has tools to be a quality pass rusher yet doesn’t get consistent pressure on QBs.
