Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

I already told you that the NFL bears as much blame for Cam Newton’s childish behavior as his enabling parents do. That was beyond obvious when he was allowed to remain in an NFL contest despite kicking Tommy Kelly and bumping an official.

But that was just the conjecture of a frustrated blogger bent because his team lost to the biggest cry baby this side of Philip Rivers. Now we’ve got concrete evidence that the NFL has no desire to punish one of their more profitable players.

While the game officials took no action against Newton on Sunday the league has. For his unsportsmanlike acts committed against Oakland Newton has been hit with a $21,000 fine. That’s roughly one weekend’s profits from ripping off fans for autographs.

Not exactly the kind of punishment befitting a man that committed two acts each of which would have had most anyone else tossed out of an NFL game – at least anyone that isn’t appearing in NFL sponsored ads that is.

We already knew that the league is out to protect its pretty boy quarterbacks. The second Tom Brady gets hurt a new rule pops up on the books. The moment a quarterback hits the ground too hard a flag is thrown.

Here’s the problem with the NFL’s stance on protecting its profitable players. It’s hypocritical to act as if there is concern for the safety of the players if it only applies to certain individuals. Who protects the players from the antics of Newton or the officials for that matter?

Basically the league is saying it is perfectly OK for Newton to kick another player then bump an official. Never mind the fine, this warranted a suspension.

But it’s all about safety…right?

The real crime is that since this wasn’t a marquee matchup there will be no national debate on the subject. Just a bit of news swept under the rug, just the way the NFL likes it.

Yeah, I know the headline alone makes me look like a bitter member of Raider Nation having watched my beloved team lose to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.

For the record I show respect when it’s due.

Respect to the Panthers for being the better team today. They deserved the win. And despite the incendiary headline of this post I do respect Cam Newton’s game. His talent is real.

However if you want a snapshot of everything that is wrong with the NFL the do yourself a favor and watch pro football’s biggest brat play every week. What I saw from Newton today was an absolute insult to the sacrifice every man in the NFL makes on a weekly basis.

Newton has clearly been enabled by a contingency of yes men during the course of his football career. He has all the tact of a three year old who doesn’t want to share his toy car with the other kids.

Today Newton exposed the NFL and its protect-the-star-QB at all costs policies.

On two separate occasions today Newton committed acts that 99.99% of NFL players would have been ejected for. In one instance he kicked Tommy Kelly and in another he bumped an official.

What provoked Cam to act in such a manner?

Well, simply put, he was sacked. That is all. Nobody spit in his face. Nobody poked him in the eye. Newton was hit hard and likely heard a few unsavory insults hurled his way. That’s about it. It’s about what every other NFL QB deals with on a weekly basis.

So is the NFL saying it’s OK for a star QB to violate very clearly written rules if he sees fit? That would seem to be the message.

Never mind what provoked Cam to act in such childish fashion. This isn’t a court trial. If you kick another player or bump an official then its time to go. See ya!

Not the case for Newton and his false sense of self-entitlement.

As if it weren’t bad enough Newton has a stable of enablers on the payroll he also has the league office giving him the green light to be a diva.

And for good measure Cam managed to sulk his way through a win too. Stay classy, Cam. You do realize you haven’t proven anything in this league right? Oh sure, stats are nice and all but wins are what truly matters. Another season of losing football and Newton will find himself with one foot in the league and another in the JaMarcus Russell pile. Good luck with that, Panthers fans.

Yeah, I might sound like a bitter fan but I’ve never taken a moment of my time to write a diatribe like this after a loss. Go ahead. Dig through everything I’ve written over the years on this blog. All I can say is that players like Newton who are being given a pass for immature behavior is exactly why we see so many negative occurrences both on and off the field in the NFL.

Congrats, Goodell. This is the star driven league you envisioned. Whiny superstars with an inflated sense of self. What great role models you’ve developed.

IF (big IF here) the Oakland Raiders have any desire to keep, develop and actually utilize the talents of Terrelle Pryor then all they’ll need to do is study the usage of Cam Newton this Sunday in Carolina.

If (smaller if this time) the Raiders actually plan on using Pryor’s talents this Sunday then all they’ll need to do is tell him to do what he’s been doing all week.

To help the Raiders prepare for Newton and the unorthodox offense the Panthers have brought to the NFL Pryor has played the role of SuperCam in practice. In fact Mike Goodson, who played with Newton last season, sees a lot of similarities between Pryor and Cam.

“Terrelle is the closest guy to Cam. We’ve got the guy.”

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

So IF (another big IF here) Greg Knapp has any imagination he’ll take some of what his young QB did in practice this week and incorporate it into his offense with Pryor. For weeks now we’ve heard talk of the Raiders getting Pryor involved. To date he’s had three plays and thrown one pass. There are impotent men on porn sets more involved than Pryor has been for the Raiders.

Reggie McKenzie has said he wants to get a look at Pryor. Raider Nation wants to see what he can do. So what is keeping Knapp from creating a few plays with Pryor in mind?

Let’s not get carried away though. By no means am I saying that Pryor is ready to run an NFL offense like Newton has done for two years now. Even with all he’s accomplished Newton’s struggles have been well documented. There is no way Pryor is ready to walk that path.

However if we’re talking about giving Pryor a few looks in a read-option package or possibly putting his talents to use in short yardage situations or even at receiver then the time is past due. As evident by last week’s touchdown free Sunday the Oakland offense is in need of a lift. Perhaps Pryor can provide just that.

Oakland has already seen what Pryor can do playing the Newton role. Why not let the rest of the world get a peek too? IF (huge IF here) that’s not asking too much of a 4-10 team.
