Now that the league is back to business as usual (well, not really but according to Judge Nelson it should be) we can get down to some real draft day drama. Tonight’s NFL Draft could be one of the most dramatic non-sporting events for a professional sports league or it could be as boring as Bill Belichick hosting open mic night at the Ha Ha Hole.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

During the last week there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the Oakland Raiders potentially moving into round one. Jerry McDonald has already broken down which possible assets the Raiders could move in order to get back into primetime tonight. Of course, that all depends on whether or not teams will be at liberty to swap players for picks. If we’re still playing by NFL lockout rules then only picks can be traded for picks.

Naturally the next step is just who would the Raiders be eyeing if they moved into the first round.

According to PFT, Al Davis has Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick as the top signal caller on his draft board and could feel the urge to move up in order to secure his services.

Jason Campbell might be the incumbent starter but he’s not the long term solution for the Raiders. Most mock drafts have the Raiders picking a quarterback at some point and chances are it could be as early as the second round.

According to the National Football Post, the Raiders have a scheduled visit with Nevada QB prospect Colin Kaepernick. Among the most sought after prospects in the draft, Kaepernick’s stock has been on the rise recently.

On the surface Kaepernick passes the Al Davis eye test. He’s tall (6’6”), has a strong arm and is a mobile passer capable of making plays with feet.

In addition to the measurables, Kaepernick posted an impressive score of 37 on the infamous Wonderlic test.

Seen by many as a second round pick, there is a chance that a team in need could select Kaepernick late in the first round after the likes of Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert have come off the board. The Raiders, of course, are without a first round pick this season thus their only real shot at Kaepernick would be in round two.

The real challenge for Kaepernick would be learning a pro-style offense. During his time at Nevada Kaepernick played in Chris Ault’s pistol offense where he took most all of his snaps in the shotgun. Getting under center and developing his drops while learning to read pro defenses is what the Raiders will be most interested in while working out Kaepernick.
