Well, Oakland managed to retain one of the members of their starting secondary. Unfortunately it wasn’t Nnamdi Asomugha. He’s comfortable in the ever-sunny city of Philadelphia $60-million richer. So Michael Huff will have to do for a free agency door prize.

Early in the offseason it seemed unlikely the Raiders would retain the services of Huff. There was plenty of speculation that Huff would have an NFL homecoming by reuniting with Rob Ryan in Dallas. Clearly there either wasn’t enough money to be found in the Huff market or just not enough suitors.

ESPN reports the Raiders re-signing of Huff whose financial figures have yet to be released.

As the first day of free agency drew to a close word began to spread late that the Raiders were negotiating with Baltimore Ravens free agent tackle Jared Gaither. At 6’9”, 340-pounds, Gaither is the kind of lineman the Raiders love. His size and athleticism would be a beautiful fit to bookend the offensive line. Just think of those two pillars, Gaither and Jared Veldheer at opposite ends. It’s a frightening prospect for opposing defenses.

Gaither is familiar with Hue Jackson as the two did time together in Baltimore during Jackson’s tenure as a QB coach. The immediate red flag is that Gaither sat out all of last season due to a back injury. There’s no telling what kind of condition he’s in due in large part to the injury but also the lengthy lockout so that has got to be a cause for concern.

Still, the Raiders desperately need to do something with the right tackle position. Taking the gamble on Gaither looks infinitely better than running free agent Mario Henderson or the unknowingly retired Langston Walker back onto the field in 2011.
