As discussed yesterday, 2012 is a year of experimenting for the Oakland Raiders. Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen are just looking to see what sticks and what falls to the ground. As part of that “experimenting” process McKenzie is banking on veteran corners with something to prove in order to help improve the secondary.

Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer have both seen better days but that doesn’t mean they can’t have another moment in the sun. That’s precisely why it makes sense to give former San Diego Charger Drayton Florence a shot in camp.

Florence was once one of football’s most explosive playmakers from the cornerback position. However his career has gone down a decidedly declining path since signing a six-year, $36-million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Florence only made it through one year of that deal before making his way to Buffalo.

For a hot second it looked like Florence was back to his playmaking ways. So much so that the Bills gave him a three-year deal before the start of last season. Yesterday the Bills parted ways with Florence as he once again made it through just the first season of a multi-year contract.

Much like Bartell and Spencer, Florence has got something to prove. If nothing else he’d help with camp competition plus can provide another veteran voice to aid in developing Oakland’s younger DBs. Florence is a burner with 4.3-speed and is an asset in the return game as well.

During this experimental year the Raiders owe it to themselves to explore every affordable option there is. Since McKenzie is doing away with the East Bay scholarship program he also owes it to every man on the roster to make them earn their roles this season. Taking a flier on Florence seems right in step with what McKenzie has done thus far.
