Al Davis loves a reclamation project. I can imagine the iconic owner spending his Saturdays flipping through Auto Trader looking for salvage titles on the cheap. Over the years few football minds have had the acumen of Davis when it comes to collecting castoffs and turning them into All-Pros.

While Oakland was overwhelmingly silent in free agency there were some minor waves made by the look-sees given to Jared Gaither, Lofa Tatupu and Lito Sheppard. Of the three only Sheppard made it onto the roster but that just earned him what amounted to a one-game audition.

Today there were reports of Oakland once again going after a player tossed onto the scrapheap. Former Patriots linebacker and NorCal native Tully Banta-Cain was said to be in the East Bay where he apparently passed a physical and conducted a workout.

Vittorio Tarfur reports that Banta-Cain was nowhere to be found at practice this evening. Let’s hope it stays that way.

The injuries are piling up faster than bad press in Miami for the Oakland Raiders. Since this is training camp and teams aren’t required to disclosure every nick, cut, bruise, bump and season ending surgery most of what we learn is all part of a gamesmanship.

No matter the severity of the injuries to Darren McFadden, Louis Murphy, Chaz Schilens, Jacoby Ford, Mike Mitchell, Chris Johnson, Hiram Eugene and Samson Satele (to name a few) there is one thing we know for certain – the Raiders don’t have the depth to afford lost time.

When Al Davis chose to let Nnamdi Asomugha walk he made it clear the decision was rooted in business interests. That’s just part of the game when it comes to professional sports. Replacing Asomugha was impossible. However doing something to soften the blow and provide temporary relief as the young DBs learned on the job was certainly doable.

Again, Davis chose to spend his money elsewhere.

The Raiders didn’t seem to think that Jared Gaither was worth the risk but the Chiefs sure did. Kansas City inked the mammoth tackle today taking one less option off the market should Oakland need more help on the O-line.

Of Course the Raiders already gave Gaither a lookover and determined he wasn’t fit for play having missed all of last season due to injury. However Hue Jackson did state that there was a chance Gaither could be brought back at a later time.

That is no longer the case unless KC parts ways with the former Terrapin.

Currently the Raiders are still in the process of sorting out the right tackle position which is where Gaither would have likely figured in. Tonight we’ll get out first look at the line as the preseason gets started against the Arizona Cardinals.
