You can’t always get what you want, even if you are a Texas billionaire. Perhaps Jerry Jones wasn’t paying attention when Al Davis made Nnamdi Asomugha the highest paid cornerback in league history two years ago.

Jones thought for sure he was going to be able to rope in Aso with a salary of $10-million a year. Then along came the Philadelphia Eagles with a 5-year deal worth $60-million.

“we obviously wanted (Asomugha) or we wouldn’t have been in the $10 million and up range to get him.”

Davis might have priced himself out the Nnamdi sweepstakes but even he knew there was going to be another team willing to give Asomugha a comparable contract to what Davis delivered.

Jones went as far as to say he knew Asomugha wanted to be a Cowboy.

“We had known that he really wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy. And that’s a fact. There, for about an hour, I thought he was going to be a Dallas Cowboy.”

If Las Vegas was giving odds on which team would disagree with terms of the latest CBA the Raiders would have gone off as the favorites. Was there any doubt Al Davis would be the lone voice of dissension in the room?

31 owners fell in line. 1 went his own way. You’d expect nothing less from Al Davis.

Those that are quick to mock Davis are sadly mistaken. No matter what any of us thinks we know about the current agreement the truth is we all know nothing. Those that are paid to cover and report on these drawn out dealings know next to nothing. The only ones who have any clue are the men and women with seats at the table.

Anything else is pure gossip, rumor, speculation and posturing.

Whatever deal point it is that left Davis with no other option except abstention will most likely never be known. More importantly, it never really mattered.

If the NFL lockout is the storm then Oakland, California, is the eye. Sitting calm and cool in the middle of labor madness is one Al Davis. While other owners panicked and cried broke, Mr. Davis opened his checkbook. As teams scrambled to shift campsites, Davis kept his commitments in Napa. During times of doubt, Davis believed.

Say what you will of Al Davis but his experience has been invaluable during this season of unrest.

Having seen the Raiders rise from the ashes of the AFC West it would have been all too easy for Davis to hit the panic button as the lockout loomed. Like many other owners Davis could have instructed his front office to stand pat and allow the new CBA to work everything out. Instead Davis took to conducting business up until the final hour.
