Last week word spread that Reggie McKenzie’s house cleaning of Oakland’s front office was well under way as he took his broom to the scouting department. Today the Raiders confirmed those moves with an announcement on their website.

Jon Kingdon, George Karras, Bruce Kebric, and Kent McLoughan are all out as McKenzie continues to restructure the Raiders player-personnel department. As reported last week Kingdon and Kebric have been “relieved of their duties” while Karras and McLoughan are retiring.

McKenzie issued the following statement.

“This was a very difficult decision because these individuals have been part of this organization for all or parts of four decades. We’re grateful for their dedicated service to the Raiders.”

Anybody who thinks football is a brutal sport only for those that play the game clearly don’t understand the nature of this business. Kingdon, McCloughan and Kebric have spent decades (plural) working in the Raider organization. Their job stability, however, was tied to Al Davis.

With Davis no longer running the Raiders, McKenzie has set out to reshape the franchise from top to bottom.

These moves would have been made months ago were it not for the NFL Draft. From day one McKenzie and Mark Davis were on a mission to remove many of the Al Davis hires that were so closely tied to the franchise. The need to keep the scouts on board for the draft made the termination of their employment a mere formality.

After all, it is impossible to overhaul a personnel department after they’ve spent an entire year scouting talent for the draft.

Also, don’t be fooled by the “retirement” of Karras and McGloughan. To quote George Clooney in Burn After Reading, “most people who quit in this town were fired.” Change is inevitable, nothing last forever, [insert additional cliché here].

Already reported to replace some of the departed from the personnel-department are McKenzie’s twin brother Raleigh and former Packers personnel man Shaun Herock. And with that yet another Al Davis fingerprint has been wiped from the Raider franchise. It had to happen one day. Still, it is hard to believe we’re living through the reinvention of the Raiders.

Reggie McKenzie is serious about leaving his fingerprints all over the Oakland Raiders franchise. So much that it will feel like there’s two of him…literally. Jerry McDonald reported last night that McKenzie has hired his twin brother Raleigh.

Football aficionados will recall Raleigh McKenzie as a former member of the Hogs. For those that aren’t knowing Hogs is the affectionate name given to the Washington Redskins offensive line. Raleigh was a member of two Super Bowl champions playing as a guard and center. Raider Nation might remember him as a former San Diego Charger as well. He worked briefly in the Redskins’ personnel department upon his retirement but has since been a high school football coach and special education teacher in Virginia.

Raleigh’s exact role is yet to be defined. McDonald goes as far as to say it’s not even known if he’ll relocate to the Bay Area.

Naturally this news comes right on the heels of Reggie McKenzie’s scouting department overhaul.

Call it nepotism. Call it a great move if Raleigh unearths some serious talent. Call it whatever you want. Just make sure you call Reggie McKenzie the boss.
