Raiders Resume the Business of Football

These are tough times for the Oakland Raiders. The passing of Al Davis will never be placed in the past. The presence of Davis will always be felt around the organization. His influence is that great that there won’t be a day that goes by without some talk or though of Davis.

Still, there is a task at hand. While I won’t pretend to know Davis I can confidently say that he would want his team to continue to prepare for Sunday’s game in Houston. Never forget that the only business Al Davis every truly knew was football.

With that being said the Raiders made a couple roster moves today.

Hue Jackson Has Got Some Explaining to Do

Hue Jackson might not be the man making all the roster decisions but since he’s on the front line he’ll have to face the music. While I highly doubt the Raiders will offer any insight into the thought process that has gone into assembling the 2011 roster they’d be wise to get in front of the story before it grows bigger. In fact, they’d be smart to say something now before the play on the field tells the true story.

This offseason has been odd to say the least. Not that we’d expect anything different from the Raiders and Kim Jong Al. Never mind the lockout, the bizarre manner of building Hue’s bully began long before the NFL owners made their cash grab.

From the Raiders letting Nnamdi Asomugh and Zach Miller walk to Michael Bennett making the final cut for one day, this whirlwind of a roster rollercoaster ride could just be getting started.

Let’s start with the most recent news.

Somebody is going to have to explain to me why the Raiders chose to keep 5 running backs (a position with great strength in the top three alone) yet parted ways with a plethora a DBs (a position of great weakness and inexperience). Only to turn around and cut Bennett then re-sign Matt Giordano whom they just cut 48-hours ago.

Raiders Unveil Practice Squad

There could still be plenty of roster moves to come but for now the Oakland Raiders have filled out their team for 2011. Today the Raiders announced the members of the practice squad. As you might expect there are nothing but familiar faces.

Most notably is Sterling Moore who cleared waivers thus landing right back in the lap of Al Davis. Moore’s impressive preseason play will almost surely be rewarded with some time on the active roster.

Joining Moore are Jamie Cumbie, Mason Brodine, Manase Tonga, Alex Parsons, Kevin Brock, Jeremy Leman and Eddie McGee. All of the aforementioned saw action in preseason games for the Silver and Black.

Another familiar face is that of Ricky Brown who was signed today for his second stint as a Raider. Seth Wand is presumed to be the man that has given way for Brown on the active roster.
