Projected Starter: Jason Campbell

It was an up and down first year in Silver and Black for JC. The man tapped to wash the stench of JaMarcus off of the franchise found it tough to overcome Tom Cable’s affinity for Bruce Gradkowski. By season’s end Campbell proved to be not only the best option but the healthiest as well.

Campbell’s ability to sell play-action better used car salesmen flip Honda Civics was among the most useful weapons in Hue Jackson’s offensive arsenal. While he still clutches onto the rock far too long, JC is the workaholic leader this franchise has so badly needed at QB. This could be the most pivotal year of Campbell’s career. If he can get his team into the postseason he’ll undoubtedly be given a new contract. Another up and down year could mean he might be seeking employment elsewhere once again.

Campbell’s Stock Rating: B

NFL Draft Experts and our fellow FanSiders over at NFL Mocks put together a team specific mock for the Oakland Raiders. Below is a recap of their round-by-round picks for the Silver and Black. You can see the post in its entirety here.

2nd Round- Ras-I-Dowling, CB from Virginia
3rd Round- Orlando Franklin, OT from Miami
4th Round- Ryan Bartholomew, C from Syracuse
5th Round- Mario Fannin, RB from Auburn
6th Round- Virgil Green, TE from Nevada
7th Round- TJ Yates, QB from North Carolina

Overall, they have the Raiders addressing some of the areas in which immediate help is needed. While I can’t agree with all of the selections, there are a couple that I love.

Maybe if Tom Cable didn’t have such a man crush on Bruce Gradkowski we might be having a different conversation right now. Chances are that even if Jason Campbell had been given every snap in 2010 we’d still have arrived at the same fork in the road. When compared to JaMarcus Russell, Campbell looks like Jim Plunkett. But no matter what Al Davis might think, when Campbell is compared to Plunkett he looks more like Jay Schroeder.

Not that there is any disrespect intended in putting Campbell in the Schroeder department. In fact, it is unfair at this point to put JC in the same category as JS being that Schroeder had a couple of winning seasons and playoff births as a starter.

Fact of the matter is that Campbell, much like Schroeder, is good for now but not for the foreseeable future.

What JC has brought to Oakland was much needed. A competent starter with a tireless work ethic and a professional demeanor. Not to mention his penchant for dealing with criticism, being benched and front office turmoil. Mind you I’m talking about his time in DC and not Oakland. Though he has already dealt with all of the above in the East Bay too.

Despite being one of the bigger reasons why the Raiders took a modest step towards respectability, Campbell just isn’t the man to get this team to the next level. His talent is real. No doubt about that. But at this point in his career I’m afraid we’ve seen about all there is to know about Jason Campbell.
