Lost in all of the Reggie McKenzie roster moves that been made are some of the ones he hasn’t. Namely allowing a group of unrestricted free agents that were contributors last season to simply walk away this season. Guys like Quentin Groves last week and now Stephon Heyer who signed with the Jets yesterday.

Heyer joins a small faction of former Raiders that have found work wearing green in NYC. The Jets boast of former Raiders receivers coach Sanjay Lal who will continue to coach up Chaz Schilens and now are joined by reserve lineman Heyer.

Heyer saw time at tackle and guard last season including making two starts both of which came against the San Diego Chargers. His value was found in providing depth for the O-line during his one season in Oakland.

Until yesterday Heyer was listed on the Raiders roster under the Unrestricted Free Agent heading. His name is now gone leaving the likes of Kyle Boller, Darryl Blackstock and T.J. Houshmanzadeh among others that are still Raiders in theory only.

Reggie McKenzie’s abolishment of the scholarship program in Oakland meant Raider Nation was never going to see Chaz Schilens reach his full potential in silver and black. Chances are that won’t happen in New York either. Not unless Schilens can actually stay healthy but more likely because Mark Sanchez will be his quarterback.

Schilens will be taking his potential to the New York Jets where he’ll be reunited with Sanjay Lal. It would be hard to imagine Lal didn’t sell Rex Ryan and the Jets brass on all Schilens has to offer. Lal has gotten a great look at Schilens as his position coach in Oakland the last few years. But given the way Sanchez continuously underwhelms it’s hard to imagine Schilens being the reason way one of Ryan’s guarantees actually comes to fruition.

No matter what he has or hasn’t done in his career it says something that Schilens has stuck in the NFL. Most 7th round picks are luck to get a year or two on the practice squad. With great size, blazing speed, an attacking mentality and some nice route running the former Aztec has done well for himself.

I wish Schilens nothing but the best and hope he makes sure to check the IDs of any chicks Sanchez brings around for a double date.

Perhaps all those NFL roadblocks Dennis Allen encountered in his attempts to interview defensive coordinator candidates have changed his approach. Or maybe its just coincidence that the last two coaches he’s hired have come from the coaching ranks. Then again it could just be that Allen is hiring the most qualified candidates.

Whatever the real reason, Allen followed his plunder of Stanford’s Jason Tarver as defensive coordinator with another PAC-12 raid.

This time Allen plucked a coach from under the nose of USC’s Lane Kiffin as Ted Gilmore has been tapped to replace Sanjay Lal as Oakland’s receivers coach.

In his one season as a receivers coach at USC, Gilmore oversaw one of the most explosive units in all of college football. He coached up sophomore sensation Robert Woods and helped introduce the world to standout freshman Marqise Lee. Woods went on to set the PAC-12 record for receptions in a season while Lee developed into one of the most dynamic deep threats in Division I.

Lal left the East Bay for the New York Jets in the wake of Hue Jackson’s firing. He’s leaving the cupboard very full for Gilmore. During his tenure in Oakland Lal did an excellent job of developing Darrius Heyward-Bey while also getting young receivers like Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore to contribute almost immediately.
