On the last day of practice being open to the fans, the Raiders have made their first roster move of training camp. Nose tackle Travis Ivey has been waived.

Unable to pass a condition test, Ivey never participated in any of the practice sessions during camp. Dennis Allen recently said Ivey’s absence from practice was due to a safety concern. As in Ivey was in no shape to play pro football therefore he was a liability to himself as far as his health goes.

About all that is relevant to this roster move is that Oakland no longer has a true nose tackle on the roster. About the only reason that matters is it could affect any designs on running a true form of the 3-4 as Allen and Jason Tarver no doubt would like to do from time to time.

Of course Ivey figured to be a part-time player at best anyway. He has been practice squad material during his two years in the NFL. If anyone is going to play the nose fulltime in a 3-4 it would be Tommy Kelly even though he’s not built like a NT. Ivey’s only true asset was his size. At 6’4”/341-pounds Ivey is built like a nose tackle. However the one tackle he’s registered in his pro career gives you all the info you need to know about Ivey’s prospects of being a major contributor.
