Cornerback group named ‘one to watch’

Mike Clay from ESPN recently put out a solid piece ranking the position groups for all NFL teams from 1-32 (subcription required). While the Raiders were not No. 1 in any position group, they were mentioned twice in the article, and surpringly, both times on the defensive side of the ball.

Looking at the Raiders cornerback group, Clay labeled them as the ‘one to watch’ in the NFL this season, thanks to the additions they made this offseason, and the fact that there are returning guys who need to step up. Clay is right in his assessment of the group as a whole, as Amukamara is widely underrated, and Joyner should be able to come back and play like he has in the past in 2020.

Overall, the Raiders cornerback room is improved from last season, and they have starting caliber players in their starting lineup, and guys behind them who can actually push them and make them better. That seemed to be the theme for the Raiders front office this season, just trying to improve every position group no matter whether there was an established starter there or not.

Mullen is going to start, as will Joyner, but it is anybody’s guess who will come out as the team’s starter opposite the second-year star from Clemson. It could be a number of guys, and if the team does decide to move Joyner to safety, Robertson can step in and start.

For a position group that has been downright bad in recent years, these are all good problems to have.
