Las Vegas Raiders 2022 opponent offseason review: Houston Texans
DefensIt’s Changes
Its funny for a team that only won four games last season the Texans didn’t feel like they needed to make many changes at all. Just like the offense, most of the players the Texans signed in free agency on defense were on the team last season as well.
One player in particular, just like on offense, that should have Raiders fan’s interest and that is defensive tackle Maliek Collins. Collins was brought in two years ago by former head coach Jon Gruden and was called the “key” to the Raiders’ defense and didn’t produce as expected.
When he signed with the Texans last season he quickly improved and seemed to be on the track he was on before his one-year stay with the Raiders. The Texans are looking to him to be not only one of the leaders on the defense but he is looking to be the “engine” of the Texans defense according to Pro Football Talk.
As I mentioned in my previous article the Texans did trade former second-round pick cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr to the Kansas City Chiefs for only a conditional 2024 seventh-round pick. Two big changes that were made for the Texans defense were once again made in the 2022 NFL Draft controversially making Derek Stingley the first Cornerback taken in the draft over the presumptive number one Cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner.
Stingley had an amazing freshman season at LSU but has struggled with production and injuries the last two seasons. The Texans also drafted hard safety, Jalen Pitre, out of Baylor in the second round. Pitre played a total of five seasons for the Baylor Bears and is already impressing the right people in Houston as head coach Lovie Smith called him a “sponge” Pitre should make an impact on a Texans secondary that struggled at times in 2021.
