Oakland Raiders 2014 NFL Draft: Second-Tier QB Options

5 of 7

Dec 13, 2013; Charleston, IL, USA;

Jimmy Garroppolo, QB Eastern Illinois

6-2, 226lbs

2013 season: 4489yrds, 48 TDs, 8 Ints

Who is Jimmy Garroppolo? A record breaker at Eastern Illinois and rapid riser in this years draft. Strong performances at the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl.

What I like: Garroppolo’s quick release is almost magic. The ball appears to teleport out of his hand. His consistently keeps his feet moving, remaining balanced and ready the throw. Has adequate size and athleticism. Moves well outside the pocket and throwing on the run.

What I don’t like: Not Pro Ready. Garroppolo should sit at least a year. Deep ball accuracy scares me, all over the place at times. Inexperienced in a pro-style offense. Low release point. Tough to tell with small-school prospects, Garroppolo looks the part, but not sure he can adapt to NFL caliber talent or hits.

Pro Player Comparison, Ryan Fitzpatrick: Another small school standout, who has had an up and down career. Both Fitzpatrick and Garroppolo have that quick release, but struggle with downfield throws. The Tony Romo comparisons are lazy, Garroppolo does not have the elite agility and pocket presence of Romo.
