Matt Schaub

I watched Matt Schaub play quarterback in the preseason opener and he honestly scared the dickens out of me. Everyone says, “Give him a chance to get used to his receivers. But that had nothing to do with it—what looked bad was that his passes stayed in the air too long and that’s what leads to pick-sixes—like the ones he threw in four straight games last year.

I just happen to believe that opening the competition up to rookie Derek Carr, who could be ready, is better than waiting to see if Schaub’s arm livens up for the regular season. If Schaub is back to his pre-2013 form, he’ll win the competition anyway so there’s nothing to lose here. Automatically hitching your wagon to an arm that didn’t look like it could get the ball down the field to receivers just isn’t smart to me.

However, the reports out of camp are that he was getting the ball down the field to receivers in the joint practices. So I’ll chill out on this one for now and wait until the next time we see him, hoping his performance matches the reports. Carr should still get a few reps with the ones just in case this really is the beginning of the end of Schaub’s greatness.
