2015 NFL Free Agency: Top Five Safeties Available

5. Will Hill

Pros: big young safety with size and athleticism. Will Hill is a very talented young safety who can play as a deep free safety or an in-the-box strong safety and be effective. He’s a solid tackler and has the short-area quickness to be a good zone defender and his instincts have improved from year to year.

Cons: he has had some big off the field issues, including serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He also still has a ways to go on his deep ball instincts and he lacks an extra gear in closing speed, limiting what he can really do at the position.

Scheme fit: he’s really more of a strong safety who has the added bonus of being able to get back into a deep half in 2-deep looks. He’s the type of player you generally line up in the box, though you wouldn’t necessarily want him trying to cover slot receivers and tight ends a lot.

Market value: Hill is another Restricted Free Agent who will probably get a tender from his incumbent team, likely a second-round tender. Any other interested team would have to give up a second-round pick to get him AND probably give him a pretty good pay raise, but it’s hard to speculate on numbers for an RFA player.

Would the Raiders sign him: no. Reggie doesn’t give up draft picks, especially not second rounders, and especially not to get players who spent six games serving a suspension just last season. Hill is a talented young safety but he’s not really on the Raiders’ radar at this point.
