After adding Dan Williams in 2015 NFL Free Agency, the Oakland Raiders will be keeping their depth on the defensive line as they will be retaining a serviceable role player at defensive lineman by confirming the signing of CJ Wilson to an extension on Monday afternoon. Keeping the former Green Bay Packers defensive end in Oakland for a second straight season after Wilson signed a one year deal with the team before the 2014 season.
News of Wilson’s extension with the Raiders leaked over the weekend, but the team officially announced the roster move on Monday via press release. Confirming that the depth player who provided two sacks and 17 tackles in his debut season with the team will be back for another year in 2o15.
Wilson has been a depth player his entire career, a former seventh round draft pick who has found his niche in the NFL as a rotational pass rusher who can get to the quarterback at times while mainly providing a breather for starting defensive lineman as a situational player.
Playing alongside Justin Tuck and Benson Mayowa last season, Wilson managed to make a handful of big plays that were impressive enough to keep him on board under a new coaching staff that will welcome the option of having a backup at the position who can be counted upon to provide snaps when needed in 2015.
The extension for Wilson also gives the team three Super Bowl winning defensive ends on the roster for another year as the former seventh round pick started in Super Bowl XLV after starting each playoff game for the Packers in his rookie season when Green Bay made their run. Wilson was a teammate of Charles Woodson’s that season and will remain with Justin Tuck and Benson Mayowa (2013 Seahawks practice squad) as Super Bowl winning pass rushers on the Raiders defensive line.
