According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, both the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers will be targeting cornerback Sean Smith in free agency.

It appears there will be a Bay Area battle for prized cornerback Sean Smith this week as reports are surfacing that the two rivals will both be going after the Kansas City Chiefs coverage man with the official tampering period now open.

According to Bleacher Report NFL insider Jason Cole, both the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers will be trying to outbid each other for Smith. With the Raiders having the perceived edge in selling Smith on the chance of making the playoffs in 2016 with the 49ers currently in transition after the Jim Tomsula debacle following the firing of Jim Harbaugh.

Cole also reported that the Raiders and Niners will also be going after the other top cornerbacks in free agency, guaranteeing that the two local teams will be fighting for the same players for much of March.

Smith is another player inside the AFC West that the Raiders apparently are coveting, joining Malik Jackson and Eric Weddle as top free agents from inside the division that general manager Reggie McKenzie is rumored to be considering. We will see if either the Raiders or the Niners win out on Smith, but with a huge need at cornerback the chance to raid a division rival could bring serious interest from Oakland in the Chiefs coverage man.
