Round 7, Pick #234: Roberto Aguayo, K, Florida State

Back in 2000, Al Davis turned the NFL world on it’s ear by drafting an underclassman kicker out of Florida State in the first round. That kicker’s name was Sebastian Janikowski, who has scored the most points in Raider history – by far. But time is undefeated, and Seabass’ time may soon be up. What better way to step forward than by coming full circle and taking another underclassman kicker out of Florida State?

Roberto Aguayo may be the best placekicker in college football history. He’s a Lou Groza winner, is statistically the most accurate kicker in NCAA history, having converted 267 of 276 attempts (field goals and extra points combined). He never missed an attempt of less than 40 yards at Florida State, all nine of his career misses came from 40 or more, but he has a comfortable range in the mid-50’s, just like Seabass.

Like Seabass, he can kick the ball a country mile off the tee, and a city mile from a good hold, and he can only get better as he gets more practice and experience. The Raiders need to move on from Seabass, and another round of Giorgio Tavecchio in training camp is not the way to go. Aguayo might not even be around in the 7th round: some prognosticators have him going in the 2nd or 3rd round, but it’s very rare to see a kicker get drafted at all, and the teams that need kickers have bigger needs that they’ll want to address in the draft. I would personally be delighted if the Raiders did use a 3rd rounder on him. If Aguayo does fall to the Raiders in the 7th round, they HAVE to take him, and complete one man’s personal draft fantasy wish list.
