A breakdown of Oakland Raiders second round selection from Illinois, defensive end Jihad Ward.
Let’s just jump right into the film.
Ward gets his arms extended and is able to drive his blocker back towards the quarterback, and then lands a hit as the ball is being thrown.
Ward gets easily moved out of the way, and the ball carrier runs for a big gain, right where Ward was lined up. The first angle looks like a double team, but the second angle shows that one of the blocks was just a touch and go.
Wards is a quality run stopper. He drives the lineman to the side, disengages, and then gets the run stop.
A lot of Ward’s pass rushing snaps coming off the edge look like this. Not much burst, average athlete, very few pass rushing moves.
Ward’s motor is a definite positive. He gets to the opposite side of the field and lays a big hit. Athleticism looked better here than on most plays.
