44. Connor Cook

The Raiders decision to trade up in the fourth round for Connor Cook raised eyebrows as general manager Reggie McKenzie made a commitment to bring in another young quarterback prospect despite having one of the best prospects in the NFL at the position in Derek Carr.

However, McKenzie made the move for the value of potentially being able to develop one of the best quarterback prospects in the draft for the cost of moving up slightly in the fourth round. Taking a chance that the Raiders will be able to increase Cook’s trade value by developing him behind Carr without having to give their new prospect any playing time over their franchise quarterback.

Cook will likely fill in as the backup behind Derek Carr and ahead of former UDFA cult hero Matt McGloin as the Raiders have made a commitment to the former two time Big Ten champion. There is a chance that McKenzie’s investment pays off down the road, but it is going to take smart roster management beginning with this offseason to ensure that Cook develops into a valuable asset for the Raiders.
