Oakland Raiders Free Agency: Potential Targets Off The Board
By Gagan Aujla
With movement in free agency starting to pickup, several potential free agent targets of the Oakland Raiders have found landing spots elsewhere.
Prior to the start of free agency, Oakland Raiders fans had their eyes on a few names in particular. While it would be nice to get the services of some of those players, it looks like Reggie McKenzie will be steering clear of any high-profile free agents.
Some of those names were Calais Campbell, Tony Jefferson, A.J. Klein, Micah Hyde, and Nick Fairley. All appear to be headed elsewhere.
Campbell, in particular, was targeted by Bruce Irvin multiple times on Twitter, but it looks like Baby Reggie’s efforts will go unrewarded. Campbell will absolutely get the money he deserves, but winning a Super Bowl is not something he appears to have prioritized by going to Jacksonville.
Another name was Tony Jefferson, strong safety for the Arizona Cardinals. It was learned by Raider Nation that Jefferson grew up a fan of the Silver and Black, which automatically riled up Raiders Twitter in trying to recruit him to Oakland.
Tony’s asking price was too steep for McKenzie, and he will end up signing with the Baltimore Ravens. This is now back to back years the Raiders have been curved in free agency by a safety.
After letting Malcolm Smith go, the Raiders will be looking for a possible replacement. A.J. Klein looked like he could have been that guy. Just like the other free agents, Klein will also be headed to a new destination.
A.J. looks is set to sign a new deal with the New Orleans Saints. He was not the flashiest prospect, but he would have filled a dire need in Oakland.
Another name the Raiders should have kept their eyes on was Nick Fairley. Just recently, Stacy McGee posted a picture via Instagram, announcing that he will be leaving Oakland.
Fairley would have not only been the perfect replacement, but he could have been paired up with Mario Edwards Jr. to form a very formidable defensive tackle front. Fairley had 6.5 sacks last season, which showed what the Raiders were missing all season. If not through free agency, the Raiders should consider addressing the defensive tackle spot this offseason.
Although it would have been nice to add Fairley, it looks like the Saints are all in on him for the foreseeable future.
