3. Leonard Fournette – 6’0″ 240 lbs – LSU

Fournette has been a household name and on the national scene since his freshman year, as he was the no. 1 recruit in a loaded 2014 class.

Some talked about Fournette sitting out this year and just waiting for the NFL. But thankfully he didn’t and gave us some additional tape, but injuries hampered his season.

Strengths:

What stands out the most about Fournette is his power. With a head of steam, not many are stopping him when he gets rolling up field. But he’s not just a power runner, as he has underrated cutting ability. He isn’t Barry Sanders, but he can jump and burst better than advertised.

There is absolutely no chance of weak arm tackles bringing him down at the next level. He runs like a bull in a china shop, absorbs contact, and keeps churning. His stiff arm is top-notch, and his vision got better each year, which shows willingness and work ethic to improve. Which correlates with what many have said about him, in that he is a fiery competitor.

Weaknesses:

There are some concerns about Forunette’s hands and overall receiving ability, but to be fair, he was rarely asked to do anything in this regard while at LSU. In order to be a truly big-time back, he’ll need to work on the finesse part of his game. Another thing is that instant backfield penetration halts him rather easily, as he typically needs to get momentum going in order to be effective.

While I love his willingness to find contact, he will need to know when and when not to do it in the NFL if he wants to sustain a long career. The list of backs with reckless running styles have had short careers is a long one, and Fournette would be wise to not join them.

Overall:

Over-hyped press has made people overthink Fournette. While he isn’t my top running back, the gap between him and the top of this class isn’t as large as most would have you think.

Fournette runs with reckless abandon and not many possess with his size and speed combination. His career will certainly be an interesting one to watch unfold.
