Round 3 – 88th Overall

Having added a linebacker and a cornerback so far, we’re off to a good start. An interior defensive lineman, a pass rusher or a safety would be ideal here if the right player was still available. But let’s see how the board shakes out.

The pick: Jaleel Johnson, DT, Iowa.

Jaleel was a popular name in the draft community prior to the combine, but talk on him has gone quiet since then. His athletic numbers didn’t come out like many thought they would, and that’s likely the reason why the hype on him has calmed down.

But film is the first and foremost measure that should be used to evaluate prospects, and on film, Jaleel looks like the real deal. Where he’ll help the most is as a pass rusher from the interior, which the Raiders sorely need.

But he’s really the whole package. He’s disruptive, powerful and has a blend of moves that make him effective, while also being stout in run support.

Other players considered: Carlos Henderson, Will Holden, Eddie Jackson, Jayon Brown.

The above players were considered, but to me, Jaleel was easily the best player left on the board. And he also fills a position of need, so this would be a fantastic pick if he can manage to fall this far.

As mentioned above, his combine scores were not impressive, and NFL teams tend to overlook the importance of interior players (like Grady Jarrett). So it’s certainly possible he’d still be available.
