The All-Decade Oakland Raiders team of the 1970’s, specifically on offense. Part one of this series.
In the storied history of the Oakland Raiders, some of the greatest players the NFL has ever seen have suited up in Silver and Black. Narrowing down the best players in team history is a daunting task, but we’ll do our best.
In the first part of this series, here is a look at the Raiders All-Decade team, specifically the offense of the 1970’s.
Quarterback – Ken Stabler
While George Blanda filled in admirably in spot duty over of the course of six seasons at the start of the decade, he was in the twilight of his career and primarily was a kicker at this point. So without question, the nod for the quarterback position for this decade goes to recent Hall of Fame inductee, Ken “The Snake” Stabler.
Stabler was at the helm when the Raiders earned their first Super Bowl victory, which came in 1976-’77 against the Minnesota Vikings. The Snake enjoyed a career year, averaging 228 yards per game with 27 TD’s and 17 INT’s, good for a QB Rating of 103.4.
For the decade, Stabler started a total of 96 games, throwing 150 touchdowns over that span. More importantly, he threw 19 touchdowns in 11 playoff starts.
Stabler was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And while better late than never, it’s a shame he wasn’t alive to relish in the recognition that he deserves.
