The Oakland Raiders drop their first game of the season to the Washington Redskins on Sunday Night Football in Week 3, 27-10. Here are all the highlights, the recap and final score.

These games happen, but it was not a night to remember in the nation’s capital for the Oakland Raiders. The team was completely flat and was pushed around by the Washington Redskins all night. Oakland drops its first game of the season 27-10 to Washington, but it was more lopsided than the score indicated.

On the second play from scrimmage, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr would be picked off by safety Montae Nicholson on a deep pass attempt near Amari Cooper. Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins would complete a pass to running back Chris Thompson for the first score of the game.

The Redskins would take a 14-0 lead into halftime. Oakland struggled to contain the Washington pass rush centered around Ryan Kerrigan and Jonathan Allen. Carr was under duress the entire night.

On the other side of the ball, Cousins just carved up the Oakland defense. He had great protection, as he was only sacked by Khalil Mack once in the game. Cousins played about as well as you can at quarterback.

The most telling stat on the night was third down conversions. While Washington converted seven of 15 third-down attempts, Oakland went 0-11 on the night. This led to the Raiders totaling just 120 yards of total offense to Washington’s 472.

If it weren’t for a pair of turnovers, a Jamison Crowder muffed punt and a Samaje Perine fumble, Oakland probably wouldn’t have had any points in this game. The Raiders’ 10 points came on short-field possessions: a pass from Carr to tight end Jared Cook and a Giorgio Tavecchio field goal.

Oakland needs to put this awful game firmly in the rearview mirror. They have a huge division game next week with Denver. If there is any consolation prize to this bad performance against Washington, at least the Broncos lost on the road to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Better luck next week.

Three Stars

  1. Kirk Cousins: Cousins completed 25 of 30 passes for 365 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He averaged 12.5 yards per attempt and had a quarterback rating of 150.7.
  2. Chris Thompson: Thompson had eight carries for 38 yards. He also had six receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown.
  3. Josh Norman: Norman neutralized the Oakland passing attack. He had two tackles, one solo.
