Oakland Raiders: 5 offensive players to watch at 2018 Senior Bowl
By John Buhler
Whoever ends up drafting Iowa State Cyclones wide receiver Allen Lazard is going to end up with a heck of a football player. Though he could have played for more high-profile Power 5 schools, Lazard opted to play in the Big 12 for the Cyclones, just like his father and his brother did before him.
Lazard was a two-time All-Big 12 first team member and a big reason that the Cyclones got to a bowl in 2017 under promising young head coach Matt Campbell. On the road against the eventual Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners, Lazard had the game-winning catch to shock the Sooners in Norman. Iowa State would also beat Big 12 runner-up in the TCU Horned Frogs this season.
Lazard has great NFL size, as he is 6-foot-5, 222 pounds. He could be one of the best possession receivers of this draft class and could have a productive NFL career for the next decade. In four seasons in Ames, Lazard had 241 receptions for 3,360 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns.
While he was the man at Iowa State, being seen as the best receiving target at his school means that he got the best coverage by the defenses he went up against. Sure, Big 12 defenses are notorious for giving up the big play aerially. However, Lazard could be the dynamic possession receiver the Raiders could look to grab to play opposite of Amari Cooper for a long time. Barring injury, Lazard will not bust at the next level.
