If you were trying to make a linebacker in a lab, you would want him to look like Tremaine Edmunds.  ‘Athletic freak’ might be short selling him when you stop and take a look at what he did at the combine. At 253 lbs, Edmunds ran a 4.54 in the 40 yards dash and measured out with an incredible wingspan (83″) and arm length (34 1/4). Tack on his 6-foot-4 frame, and he’s exactly what you want in a modern-day linebacker.

However, Edmunds isn’t just all measurables. He was incredibly productive while at Virginia Tech, with over 200 tackles and 10 sacks in 32 games.

Much like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Edmunds will bring tremendous versatility to whatever team drafts him. He effortlessly plays sideline to sideline, is quick enough to cover backs or tight ends, and could be a devastating pass rusher if allowed to blitz.

The edge Roquan Smith has over him at the moment is between the ears. Edmunds plays a little more with his feet than his mind at this point and isn’t always quick to diagnose plays. His desire to see and go immediately leaves him a little confused. He also takes too many false steps, which leads to him getting caught in traffic or over-pursuing.

Next: The Raiders need to bring NaVorro Bowman back

At only 19 years old, there is still so much Edmunds can learn about the nuances of the game. The ceiling is so high for this kid, it is insane, which is why I have him slightly over Smith. Him possibly being coached by Guenther and mentored by Navarro Bowman warms my heart.
