Fred Warner – Linebacker, BYU

Fred Warner is the exact combination of athleticism and smarts the Raiders need in their linebacking corp. He plays with great instincts and gets quickly into the backfield, as displayed by him racking up 32 tackles for a loss during his time as a cougar.

He also offers some versatility in the passing game as a slot defender in zone coverage, as he finished his career with13 career pass deflections.

The biggest issue with Warner is he is not the most physical player at 230 pounds. The Wisconsin game this past season was proof that he needs to put on the weight, even to play weakside linebacker at the next level. If Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther wants to get creative, he could turn Warner into a hybrid linebacker/safety type.

While others may shy away from in-between players in Warner, I think position versatility is a great thing to have. It could allow the Raiders to add depth at two positions with one player.

He’s been projected from anywhere between the late third to the fifth round so the Raiders should be on the lookout. The team added two fifth round picks this past week, and Warner could be available then.
