When it comes to the Oakland Raiders, the word cornerback usually strikes fear in the hearts of the fan base. Over the last few seasons, the team has struggled to put talent at this crucial position, though help should be on the way in 2018.

Last year, the team spent a first round pick on Gareon Conley, who spent most of 2017 on the injured list. He will be healthy in 2018, and the hope is that he can slide right into that CB1 slot that is now vacant since the team released Sean Smith this offseason.

In addition to Conley, the team went out and signed free agent Rashaan Melvin, who is likely slated to start on the opposite side. Melvin played fantastic football for the Indianapolis Colts last season, and appears to be quite the steal for Gruden and company.

With their third round pick in April, Oakland should look to bring more talent to this position group. One player who will be available in round three is Anthony Averett, who would join his former position coach, Derrick Ansley, who signed on with the Raiders after spending last season with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Averett is an incredible athlete, as shown by the fact he was the state champion in New Jersey in the high jump. He had to work his tail off to get snaps during his time at Alabama, and with the Raiders, he could be that nickel corner the team so desperately needs.
