4. Karl Joseph, 2016 NFL Draft

Safety Karl Joseph out of West Virginia University checks in on our list as the fourth-best first round pick for the Oakland Raiders in the last ten years. The fact that Joseph is in this ranking just shows how many times the Raiders swung and missed in this last decade.

It is a bit premature to put Joseph in this, but there isn’t any other player worthy to replace him.

With all that said, his selection was based off of need. Charles Woodson had just retired prior to that draft, leaving the hole at the safety position even deeper.

So far Joseph has shown great promise. His rookie year he showed us all that he is not afraid of contact, being a real hitman like an old school Raider.

Last season, however, he showed us all that he is also not afraid to miss tackles. Joseph whiffed countless times, constantly leaving his feet to make a tackle. That’s more of a reflection of poor coaching.

How could they let Joseph go all season making poor tackles? They were either coaching it or allowing it.

I expect Joseph to fall back into form this upcoming season now that he actually has a competent coaching staff. Maybe we’ll finally get to see Joseph get to play free safety, instead of strictly for run support. The full potential of Karl Joseph will be tapped in by defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. Joseph is another player to keep an eye on come the regular season.
