It has been long overdue since the Raiders have had a skilled cornerback. After so many failed acquisitions from David Amerson to Sean Smith, the Raiders have finally got this acquisition right. Melvin joins the team after having a superb season. No other corner that the Raiders have brought on has had one similar to Melvin prior to joining the team.
It’s no secret that the Raiders had the worst corners last season, setting the NFL record for most consecutive games without an interception. Not a single corner was a ball hawk nor playmaker. Melvin on the other hand is. If targeted he’ll play the ball better than any corner we’ve seen in years. His contributions will be felt immediately.
Offenses will likely leave Melvin alone at first to test out fellow cornerback Gareon Conley. That right there would already be an impact by shutting down his side of the field.
Even if quarterbacks want to test Rashaan Melvin, there’s a good chance it’s not going to be completed. I’m excited to see how it’ll play out on the field once the regular season finally arrives.
