Oakland Raiders: 17 burning questions heading into the 2018 season
By Brad Weiss
Who starts at right tackle?
With their first round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected UCLA left tackle Kolton Miller. With a star at left tackle already in place in Donald Penn, Miller would have to sit behind Penn in 2018 for sure, but things are changing with the depth chart already.
This week, Miller was seen with the first-team during walkthroughs at right tackle, after Jon Gruden had previously said Miller would only be on the left side. That begs the question as to whether or not Miller can unseat Breno Giacomini at right tackle, after he was signed this offseason to be the other bookend on this offensive line.
Miller has the tools to start in year one, and the Raiders did use a first round pick on him. There is no reason why he cannot begin his career on the right side, and then when Penn is ready to retire, move over to left side for possibly the rest of Derek Carr‘s career.
Giacomini was brought in to battle for the starting job, so he is not going to go away quietly. In addition, the Raiders also have Jylan Ware fighting for a starting spot, as well as third round pick Brandon Parker. This is going to be fun to watch, as players will get a lot of opportunities to show what they can do until Penn is 100 percent healthy.
