Tight Ends

Dave Casper, Todd Christensen, Raymond Chester

Throughout the course of the Raiders history as a professional football franchise, they have been blessed with a handful of extremely talented tight ends. For the purpose of this article, we had to narrow it down to only three making the all-time 53-man roster, and we could not be happier with the choices.

Dave Casper was nicknamed “The Ghost,” and throughout his career with the Raiders, he showed a knack for making the biggest of plays. No play was any bigger than “The Ghost to the Post,” when Casper caught a Ken Stabler pass against the Baltimore Colts in a 1977 Divisional Round game, which set up the Raiders for a game-tying field goal.

In addition to that play, Casper also was the one who scored the touchdown on the “Holy Roller” play, as the Raiders beat the hated San Diego Chargers 21-20. His place in Raiders history is a special one, and he is one of many members of the organization enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Todd Christensen is known by many outside of Raider Nation by his mustache, but he was so much more than just a finely manicured stache. Christensen played for the Raiders from 1979-88, and as the Raiders tight end, he went to five straight Pro Bowls.  A key member of two Super Bowl teams, Christensen missed only one game as a Raider, and has to be included on the all-time 53-man roster.

The third tight end is Raymond Chester, who had two stints with the Raiders during his pro football career. Despite playing in the NFL for 13 seasons, Raymond only made the Pro Bowl as a Raider, earning the nod four times. A member of the Super Bowl XV team, Chester was the NFL’s Rookie of the Year back in 1970, and was a first round pick by Al Davis.
