Safety tandem?

One of the biggest questions heading into training camp is who will be the team’s tandem at the safety positions. Sure, Karl Joseph should be one of the team’s starters back there, but the other starter is definitely up in the air, and it could be any number of players.

Reggie Nelson is still with the team, and he was the starter alongside Joseph last season. Nelson played for Guenther during his time in Cincinnati, and it is pretty clear that his former coach favors him right now, especially early in the offseason.

In addition to Joseph and Nelson, guys like Marcus Gilchrist, Erik Harris, and Obi Melifonwu are going to challenge for time, and that is to just name a few. Harris has really turned heads through the spring and summer months, and he is starting to gain the respect of Coach Gruden and the rest of the staff.

Obi was a second round pick of the team in 2017, but he battled injuries all last season. Gilchrist is a solid veteran, and guys like Shalom Luani and Dallin Leavitt are going to challenge to make the roster in camp. This is certain to be one of the funnest positions to keep an eye on this summer, as the secondary needs to be better in 2018.
