Cook as QB No. 2

One of the bigger position battles heading into training camp was for the backup job behind Derek Carr. Both Connor Cook and EJ Manuel were on the roster last season, with Manuel serving as the backup over Cook, who started the Raiders playoff game two years ago.

Gruden may not want to keep three quarterbacks, as that was usually the case when he last coached in the NFL. Cook was the first in against the Detroit Lions in preseason game No. 1, and played very well, tossing the Raiders only touchdown pass of the game to Ryan Switzer, and making plays with his legs, and arm.

Tonight will be another huge step for Cook, and hopefully that step is in the right direction. He put together some sub-par practices after his breakout game against the Lions, but Carr really likes him, and he can firmly plant himself as the No. 2 QB on this team with a solid performance against the Rams.
