Denver Broncos beat Oakland Raiders on last-second field goal
By Brad Weiss
The Oakland Raiders went into Denver and lost to the Broncos in crushing fashion, as a last-second field goal did them in, 20-19.
The Denver Broncos were down 19-7 with five minutes left in the third quarter on Sunday afternoon, but came all the way back, beating them on a Brandon McManus field goal with under ten seconds left in the game. After starting out hot, the Raiders took their foot off the gas, and let the Broncos inch their way back in the game.
For the second week in a row, the Raiders scored on their opening drive, although this time it was a field goal that opened up the scoring. Mike Nugent would hit another field goal in the second quarter, but it was his extra point miss that ended up being the killer for the Raiders on this day.
Raiders quarterback Derek Carr shook off a subpar opener to play historically well against the Broncos, completing 90 percent of his passes, but it still was not enough. The Raiders defense also looked good for a second straight week, and even got an interception, but they were on the field way too much in the second half.
When it was all said and done, the Broncos came away with a 20-19 victory in front of their home crowd, moving to 2-0 on the season, while sending Oakland looking for their first win of the season.
Highlights
Coming off a monster game against the Seattle Seahawks, Von Miller got to Derek Carr early in this one.
For the second week in a row, Marshawn Lynch found the end zone, as he put the Raiders up 12-0 late in the first half.
An absolute strike from Derek Carr to Seth Roberts on second down, putting the Raiders up 19-7 midway through the third quarter.
Case Keenum brings the Broncos within two points, turning the momentum in Denver’s favor late in the fourth quarter.
Brandon McManus drills the field goal to give the Broncos the lead, sealing the victory for Denver at home.
Three Stars
1. Phillip Lindsay, Denver Broncos
The rookie had a monster of a game against the Raiders, rushing for over 100 yards in a dominant effort. Lindsay showed shades of the Broncos former No. 30, Terrell Davis, as he ran all over the Raiders defense. He looks to be a special back, and playing his college ball in Colorado certainly prepared him for the altitude on Sunday.
2. Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders
The Raiders signal-caller had a phenomenal game against the Broncos on Sunday, though it was not enough to bring the Raiders their first win of the season. Incredibly, Carr completed 90 percent of his passes, throwing for 288 yards and a touchdown. Oakland is searching for their first win, but if Carr plays like this every week, they are going to be fine.
3. Amari Cooper, Oakland Raiders
A week after making only one catch against the Los Angeles Rams, Amari Cooper was featured big-time in the Raiders offense on Sunday. Cooper finished the game with ten catches, going over 100 yards for the first time this season, and showed the kind of down the field prowess that will be needed in this offense if they are going to succeed.
Next Week
The Raiders will continue their search for their first win next weekend on the road in South Beach, as they take on the 2-0 Miami Dolphins. Denver will head east to take on the Baltimore Ravens inside M&T Bank Stadium, as they look to run their record to 3-0 on the young season.
