Opening drive mindset

The Raiders rank 30th in points per game, so no need to really delve into how effective the offense has been this season. But if there is credit to be given then one must acknowledge that Jon Gruden has been stellar in crafting his opening drives this season.

The Raiders rank fourth in average points scored on opening drives (3.1 points). On Sunday Derek Carr completed 4 of 6 passes for 58 yards and the drive was capped off with Doug Martin’s first rushing touchdown on the year. It’s an encouraging sight to see, but the opening drive is essentially the offense’s peak every week.

Their opening drive success should be applauded, but they need to keep that mindset for all four quarters of football which has really been this offense’s Achilles heel. Penalties, dropped passes, and botched play calling hinder the momentum generated when Oakland completes a successful opening drive.
