Oakland Raiders: Brian Callahan named Bengals OC

The Oakland Raiders quarterback coach Brian Callahan will be heading to Cincinnati to take over as offensive coordinator.

The Oakland Raiders will be in the market for a new quarterback coach for next season, as head coach Jon Gruden announced Brian Callahan would be moving on to be the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati down at the Senior Bowl. Callahan was in his first season as quarterback coach in Oakland, after holding the same role in Detroit from 2016-17.

Callahan is the son of former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan, who took over for Gruden back in 2003, and led the Raiders to  the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, Callahan and the Silver and Black ran into Gruden in the big game, and were throttled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game they were never really in.

With Callahan leaving, the Raiders will now have to hire a new quarterback coach for the fourth straight season. Derek Carr is coming off his best season as a professional, statistically in 2018, and has mastered Jon Gruden’s intricate offense.

For the first time in his career, Carr threw for over 4,000 yards, and did not throw a single interception from Week 6-16. It should be noted that the Bengals do not currently have a head coach, so adding coordinators at this time is a bit of a shock.

Zac Taylor, a quarterback coach as well, but for the Los Angeles Rams, is expected to be name head coach in Cincinnati, who will be replacing Marvin Lewis after 16 seasons on the job. While Lewis led the Bengals to the playoffs on numerous occasions, he never actually won a playoff game in Cincinnati, so it is pretty shocking he kept his job that long.

Callahan has earned his shot to be an offensive coordinator at the NFL level, and we at JustBlogBaby wish him luck in his new role.
