1968 Oakland Raiders

Heading into the 1968 season, the Oakland Raiders added some legendary pieces, as the campaign would be the first in the Silver and Black for guys like Art Shell, George Atkinson, and Ken Stabler. The team would once again be one of the dominant teams in the AFL, winning 12 games, and locking up another AFC West title.

The 1968 season saw the Raiders play in one of their more famous games as well, as the “Heidi Game” against the New York Jets is still talked about today. After blasting the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round, the Raiders would have a rematch with those Jets in the AFL Championship Game, and lost a heartbreaker to Joe Namath and company by the score of 27-23.

This Raiders team was outstanding, and “Mad Bomber” Daryle Lamonica ended the season by throwing for over 3,200 yards and 25 touchdowns. He revolutionized the way the quarterback position was played, and had some incredible weapons in Warren Wells, Fred Biletnikoff, and Billy Cannon in the passing game.

On defense, Dave Grayson hauled in ten interceptions, and the Raiders team, had they beaten the Jets, likely would have toppled the Indianapolis Colts, who the Jets upset in the Super Bowl.
