1972 Oakland Raiders

The 1972 Oakland Raiders were a special bunch, and had it not been for a controversial call in the 1972 Divisional Round against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they likely would have hosted the Super Bowl trophy. The Raiders went into the 1972 campaign loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, and ran through their opponents, clinching their second AFC West title in three years.

Oakland won their last six games of the regular season, finishing with 13 wins, and went into the playoffs full of confidence. During the season, the team  got a tremendous effort from running back Marv Hubbard, who rushed for over 1,000 yards, but the Raiders had an all-time defense with guys like Phil Villapiano, Willie Brown, and Dan Conners to name a few.

Of course, we all know how the 1972 season ended, as Franco Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Raiders in the Divisional Round. However, the “Immaculate Reception” is still not a catch in my book, and had they beaten the Steelers, they likely would have went on to win their first Super Bowl title.

Oakland would fall in the playoffs over the next couple of season, before finally winning their first title after the 1976 campaign. This organization was  juggernaut during the 1970s, and should have come away with at least one more Super Bowl ring.
