2001 Oakland Raiders

The 2001 Oakland Raiders were a special team, led by a solid blend of young stars, and wily veterans. After going 10-6 in the regular season, and winning the AFC West, the Raiders went into the playoffs on a skid, after losing their last three games of the year.

However, they took care of business in the Wild Card Round, defeating the New York Jets by the score of 38-24. Led by star quarterback Rich Gannon, who enjoyed a career renaissance during his time in the Silver and Black, the Raiders went into their Divisional Round matchup against the New England Patriots on the road feeling pretty good about themselves.

Oakland matched the Patriots shot for shot, and looked like they would win the game, when up 13-10, they got a strip sack fumble on a young Tom Brady. However, the play was ruled that he tucked the ball, calling it an incomplete pass, and the Patriots would reel off two field goals to beat the Raiders in overtime, 16-13.

Whatever you want to say, the fact is, Tom Brady fumbled that ball, and had the Raiders won the game, you have to like their chances to win it all. After the game, Jon Gruden was traded away to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending his run as head coach, and though the team made the Super Bowl the next year, they were thrashed by Gruden and his new team.
