Oakland Raiders free agency: Donald Penn released
The Oakland Raiders and Donald Penn have decided to part ways, as the team will clear cap space as they look to continue to rebuild this roster.
The five year run for Donald Penn and the Oakland Raiders is over. The team and Penn have mutually agreed to part ways, which was expected after the Trent Brown signing. The release of the veteran offensive tackle frees up $5 million in cap space.
This cements, for now, that Brandon Parker will be the backup swing tackle. Penn has indicated in a twitter post that he is not yet done with his football career. He will hopefully try to find work elsewhere and will possibly find it.
Donald Penn had been playing on borrowed time with the Oakland Raiders from the very moment they selected Kolton Miller with their first round pick. The selection of Miller pushed Penn to right tackle, which was a huge demand for a player with hardly any experience at the position. That move is likely what caused Penn’s recent injury.
It had been a rough outing for him the last couple of years. The injury bug bit him hard and he struggled to shake it off. However, it is not the last couple of years that Penn’s tenure with the Raiders should be remembered for.
It should really be his first three seasons when he was first signed in 2014. Penn was a vital factor in the development of Derek Carr. He has been blocking for Carr since his rookie year and helped the team to it’s explosive run in 2016.

Donald Penn was a tone setter and an excellent leader for not just the Raiders offensive line, but the entire team. He made two Pro Bowls in the Silver and Black in 2016 and 2017, with 2016 as his most recognized year.
