With questions at running back, the Oakland Raiders brought in a solid free agent on Thursday, signing former New York Jets back Isaiah Crowell.

The Oakland Raiders have successfully managed to fill many of their holes during this free agency period. Still, even with the plethora of signings the team is still lacking in some areas.

One of those areas that are lacking is running back. Incumbent starter Marshawn Lynch is still a mystery to return with no timetable on a decision. Meanwhile, Doug Martin who filled in for Lynch while he was injured will not be returning to the Raiders due to his reported demand for more money.

The depth chart currently consists of Jalen Richard, Deandre Washington and Chris Warren III. This isn’t a sufficient group despite the wild claims from some fans that Warren is the feature back. Clearly the running back position is in need of an upgrade or at least another addition.

That is why they have signed Isaiah Crowell formerly of the New York Jets.

Isaiah Crowell was a productive back during his days with the Cleveland Browns. He nearly touched a 1,000 rushing yards for three seasons straight and was also a heavy player in the pass game in 2016.

Crowell isn’t an every down back, but he is versatile. His signing makes the Raiders run concept by committee, which is still effective for an offense. The Raiders can still draft a running back and very well should on day two.

Crowell will help keep the offense dynamic and in rhythm. There’s a chance he could be a lock on the team and even rise to playmaking ability. He does have the talent and is only 26 years old. If that is the case, the likelihood of Marshawn Lynch’s return dwindles. For now, he is just an average signing. Nothing too exciting, but an improvement nonetheless.
