Paul Guenther’s defensive scheme doesn’t utilize a true free safety or strong safety. His system requires both safeties to come in and out of the box depending on the formation, and be able to cover tight ends and play deep zone.
Deionte Thompson, a safety who has the sideline to sideline range that isn’t seen in most players, would be an excellent fit for the Raiders. Not only can he play free safety, but lining up over tight ends at the strong safety spot is something he can do as well.
Players will excel the most when a scheme matches there skill set, and Deionte Thompson can be a game changer for the Raiders at pick No. 35. They have some solid players at the position already, but Thompson may be the best overall player at the position group in this draft class, and would be a steal in the second round.
