Round 1, Pick No. 4: Clelin Ferrell, Edge, Clemson

Going into the 2019 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders had to take a defensive lineman fourth overall. Being the worst pass rushing defense last season, an immediate impact starter was needed. That is where Clelin Ferrell’s Raiders career begins as the fourth overall selection.

It was a pick that I feel was a reach. It’s no knock on Ferrell, as he is a solid defensive end and fits Paul Guenther’s scheme like the last piece of a puzzle. However, Ferrell is a reach in a sense he most likely would’ve still been around 10th overall and maybe even past.

Of course, the option to trade back was not present to them or anyone in top-10 until it was the Denver Broncos turn.

Regardless of it being a reach, I have always compared the NFL draft to a game of baseball. Better to make contact on a pitch with the potential of a home run than to completely strike out. Plus, if we recall to last year’s draft where the Raiders took Kolton Miller, then the two picks are almost night and day.

Ferrell flashed on the national stage with the brightest lights when it counted. So while I do believe he was a reach, he’s still a good player with a lot of upside. It’s on the Raiders coaching staff to ensure Ferrell’s worth at fourth overall. Needless to say watching his career in the Silver and Black is going to be a sight to see.
