NFL Draft 2019 Results: Analysis on all Oakland Raiders draft picks
Round 1, Pick No. 24: Josh Jacobs, RB, Alabama
Of all the picks the Oakland Raiders made from the 2019 draft, running back Josh Jacobs’ selection at 24th overall was the most predictable. The former University of Alabama star will now don the Silver and Black as Marshawn Lynch’s replacement.
Jacobs’ addition makes the Raiders running back room lethal. However, as talented that I know he is, taking him in the first round was not a value pick. Drafting running backs in the first round is essentially taboo.
Mainly because they are the most plug and play positions. Just look at Doug Martin’s production last season. He ran for over 700 yards after taking over for Lynch in the midway point of 2018.
The Raiders were the only team to take a running back in the first round which is revealing. It’s proven time and time again that impact running backs can still be found after round two. Drafting Montez Sweat at 24th overall, who was falling for a heart condition similar to Maurice Hurst last year, would’ve been the ideal choice. Impactful defensive ends are more valuable than running backs.
Once again, Jacobs is a talent who will likely continue to elevate his play. It just feels like the Raiders left the dinner table with an unfinished plate. With all that said, the offense looks like a well oiled machine. Selecting Jacobs is just further insurance to protect the investment of Derek Carr who needs a productive 2019 season.
