This offseason the Oakland Raiders brought aboard arguably the best wide receiver in free-agency with the addition of Tyrell Williams. With Williams switching teams in order to put on the silver and black, how well will he flourish under Jon Gruden?

Tyrell Williams was a desirable figure on the free-agent market this offseason, largely do to the attributes that he possesses on the field. His size and speed is the separating factor that makes him such a prolific pass catcher. He’s listed at 6’4″ and can run down the sideline with the best of them.

Over his pervious four seasons, he served as a quality complementary piece to the Chargers receiving core. Williams only hauled in a 1,000-yard receiving season just one time in his career, but when he was targeted as the main option on the offense, he flourished as a threat on the outside.

His best season came in 2016 when Keenan Allen missed 15 games, making Williams the ‘go-to’ receiver. When given the opportunity, Williams displayed how lethal he can be cutting apart opposing secondaries and making it known across the league that he’s a player that defenses must take into consideration when putting together a game plan.

Now as apart of the Raiders, he’ll be paired alongside four-time all-pro wide receiver, Antonio Brown. Despite being the number two option in Oakland, the Raiders project as a ‘pass-first’ offense under Jon Gruden, so there should be plenty of balls to go around.

The duo of Brown and Williams is a tandem that ranks near the top of wide receiver groups across the NFL. Derek Carr will likely be asked to sling the ball across the field more often than he’s done over his first five-years thus far. Carr’s usage in the passing game in 2019 projects to be a similar blue print to the same style of offense that he ran in 2016.

Dating back to Carr’s 2016 season, he had two targets out wide who both accumulated over 1,000-yards receiving, with Amari Cooper totaling 1,153-yards and Michael Crabtree totaling 1,003-yards.

If Williams can post his second 1,000-yard receiving season of his career as Carr’s number two option, it’s certain that he’ll give the Raiders an opportunity to make a run for a playoff berth.

Williams will have a tremendous opportunity to rack up yardage. He’ll be facing the opposing teams second best cornerback, due to the fact that the Raiders will have Antonio Brown on the opposite side of the field, taking away the opposition’s best defensive back. Brown will be the main focus for opposing defense’s, allowing Williams to get better looks and excel in Gruden’s offensive game plan.
